Senior Maths Challenge
A team of four sixth form mathematicians, Arman Badiei Khorsand, Florence Yuen, Jade Watt and Sherman Zhang took part in the UK Senior Maths Challenge at Leeds University after school on Monday 14th November.
These four students were competing against 25 teams from the region. Unfortunately their confidence was knocked in the first group round as they scored less than half marks, but they gained a respectable mark on the cross number round and their valiant effort on the last relay round resulted in our team being placed 9th in the competition.
Gifted and Talented.
Eight Gifted and Talented Year 11 students, accompanied by Mr Heaton, the Gifted and Talented coordinator, went to Manchester to a series of fast paced, rigorous and challenging lectures. The thought provoking topics included; Living Forever: what will happen?; Forensic Psychology: The Real ‘Cracker’; Are Humans Born to Kill; and It’s a Man’s World!
This is an annual event, hosted by the Richard Huish College, which offers academically gifted students a unique opportunity to debate topical issues. It is one of the largest rounds of conferences for Gifted and Talented students and has a track record for stretching and enthusing students.
Fulneck has attended this event for several years and the debate stimulated lots of lively discussion on the return journey back to school!
Eco Group
The fourteen members of the Fulneck Eco group gave presentations of their work to both the Senior School and 6th form assemblies last week. They have put forward the message that Fulneck School wants to raise awareness of environmental problems. The Eco group members distributed stickers, reminding every- one in school to switch off lights, monitors and computers when not in use, and to say goodbye to standby.
Memorial Service
Members of the Junior and Senior Schools came together after school on Thursday in church, in a service of remembrance and thanksgiving for the life of Mrs Sandra Dixon. Mrs Dixon was a member of the Junior School staff and had previously been the Senior Boarding Housemistress. The service included some of Mrs Dixon’s favourite music, performed by the Junior Choir.
Charity Bike Ride
We welcomed back learning support assistant, Mrs Tess Hainsworth, this week after her gruelling sponsored bike ride in Cambodia and Vietnam. Her 270 mile journey in the tropical heat raised over£141,000 for the British Heart Foundation.
Four Nations Grand Final
The rugby league bug has really bitten at Fulneck School, with over 100 students, staff and parents attending Saturday night’s epic Four Nations Rugby League Final at Elland Road.
Rugby league is a new sport at Fulneck. However, such has been the enthusiasm amongst staff and students that Fulneck actually sold more tickets to the final than any other school in the country.
Mr Needham stated that since we introduced rugby league here there’s been a wave of enthusiasm, particularly amongst our overseas borders who have been amazed by the speed and physicality of the sport.
We regularly take our students out to live sporting events but this has been by far the biggest response we’ve ever had to any single event. Our students are really excited by rugby league and can’t wait to start playing the sport when we have our first crack at the Champions Schools Cup in the New Year.
