Theatre Visits
It's a hard-knock life! On Thursday December 1, Year 9 pupils, accompanied by their teachers, took the advantage to enjoy the highly praised production of Annie showing at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. This was a spectacular production, with exciting sets and costumes and a fast paced narrative which engaged a whole range of pupils, including some who were very sceptical beforehand. Next term pupils will able to use some of the insights they gained from this visit when they tackle the set design unit in Drama.
A good time was evidently had by all as various versions of 'Tomorrow', 'Easy Street' and the other musical classics from the show were to be heard being hummed or sung around the school for days after.
English Study Day
A small but select group of students of literature headed to Manchester on Thursday 1st December for an intensive Study Day organised by Sovereign Education on Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”. This seminal novel is currently in the headlines with the release of a new film version featuring a mixed race Heathcliff, and this was alluded to by some of the keynote speakers. The syudents had the opportunity to listen to four varied university lecturers share their thoughts on topics as diverse as Transgression & Excess, the narrative structure of the novel and the position of women. It was all very illuminating and helpfully focused on the demands of the syllabus, giving a taste of what it will be like to be an undergraduate next year.
Talented Artists
Nine sixth form Art students visited the ‘Design You Future’ University Convention in Manchester this week. They had the chance to speak to University representatives from the UK and abroad about the courses they offer, university life, fees etc. It was a really productive trip and students came back knowledgeable about the courses on offer and what they needed to do to achieve a place.
The students spent the afternoon at the Manchester Art Gallery and worked with their sketchbooks from the exhibitions on offer. Grayson Perry is exhibiting there alongside other old masters.
Travelling Books
The recent book sale in the Senior School library was a great success, giving everyone a chance to buy from a great range of books. Helped by recommendations from pupils, the Librarian, Mrs Burton, has been able to choose a box full of free books for the library. These include new ones by L. J. Smith, Michael Morpurgo, Malorie Blackman and others, not forgetting a ‘Where’s the Meercat’ puzzle book.
Ultimate Frisbee
On Sunday, two teams from Fulneck travelled to Coventry to compete in the 2011 Junior Womens’ Nationals competition for Ultimate Frisbee.
The first team, captained by Lucy Pickles and comprising of 6 Sixth Form girls, had a triumphant weekend – winning 6 games out of 7 and finishing in the ‘plate’ final – competing for 9th place. With exceptional defence played by Lucy Pickles, confident offence from Eri Leung and spectacular grabs by Kathlyn Atienza and Yube Chan the team won 5-1 and came home with the plate trophy. The ‘Most Valuable Player Award’ went to Eri Leung for the Plate final, and to Lucy Pickles for the tournament.
The second team of much younger girls had a tough day, having no substitutes and relatively new players on the squad. They played 6 games overall and won two, to finish 19th. Niamh Davis and Katrina Atienza worked hard all day to offer strong defence, Danielle Cunningham played some confident offence, and captain, Annabelle Swift, worked hard all day and was rewarded with the team MVP award for the tournament.
