Netball U12 V GSAL, 9th January 2012
The first match of the year saw two U12 teams travelling to the Grammar School at Leeds. The girls were ready and raring to play again after the Christmas break but did not really know what to expect from their opposition. The first team went out strongly, remembering what they had learned in the first term of school; being able to link strong passes in a structured way down the court. Georgia Wade and Evie McArthur were confident when shooting and scored 12 goals between them in the match. Victoria Carter, Kim Basra and Abbi Holyoake (Year 6) were effective in defence being able to anticipate that ball and take many interceptions from their opponents. The final score was 12-2 to Fulneck, and an excellent game by all players.
The 2nd team also played with moments of strength, being able to pass the ball accurately to their team members. This team, however, had not played together this season and for some girls it was their first match for the school. The final score was 7-1 to GSAL. The score does not reflect the effort the girls put in to keep possession of the ball, so well done, and keep up the hard work!
1st Team: Victoria Carter, Kim Basra, Abbi Holyoake (Yr6), Phoebe Briggs, Hritika Modi (Yr6), Georgia Wade, Evie McArthur
2nd Team: Alice Noonan, Laura Thomas, Emma Temple Clothier, Zara Brogan, Annabel Crossley, Isabelle Lawman, Olivia Whittaker (Yr6), Isabella Harper (Yr6).
Leeds City Netball Player
Congratulations to Annabelle Swift in Year 9 on her selection for the City of Leeds Schools Under 14 netball trials. In the words of Annabelle:
‘I was really nervous before I got there - but once I saw all the other girls I relaxed because they were all really friendly. There were girls from schools all over Leeds and I would say it was a close competition in the end. We all had to register our names and were given a number, before we continued into the gym to warm up before being split into three teams of 10 girls and told to discuss which positions we played. The coach then made us play around five games of which I played three; owing to the fact I had to sit off for one (due to numbers), and my team was off for the other. The games took about 30 minutes in total, so we had to cool down by stretching off afterwards. The coach then sat us down and gave us feedback on our games. She next announced who was to come back next week - I was one of these girls and I was so pleased to be asked back to the second trials because it gives you a real sense of achievement.
‘When I returned the following week we were then put into different teams. Some more games were played in which the coach told us they were looking at our skills and ability to play netball - rather than the positions we had on. After the games were finished, we had a cool down whilst the coaches had a chat about the 20 girls they were going to select for the development squad.
‘We were then taken outside, where the main coach gave us more feedback about how we'd played, and then read out the numbers of the girls who they had chosen. My number was 17 - and when she read it out I couldn't really believe it, and I think all the selected girls were the same as we all had massive smiles on our faces!
‘So now I have the opportunity to attend a 10-week development course, play as part of the Leeds City Under 14 Squad, and gain experience in the sport I love that will help me to continue playing to the best of my ability’.
U16 Football
National Small Schools Shield. The U16s bowed out again at the quarter-final stage of this national cup. Despite dominating the game for long periods, Fulneck were unable to take their chances and paid the price in the final 10 minutes.
Fulneck started the game in total control. Jonny Beck was commanding at the back ensuring the long ball was always cut out. Sean Burns was instrumental in starting off the Fulneck attacks and Callum Murgatroyd and Jake Clifford were excellent in midfield. Fulneck missed a number of chances in the first half with Hasn Abdulfatah and Robert Chivese coming close. Callum Murgatroyd then rattled the crossbar. Russell Pritchard was having an excellent game out on the right-hand side. With five minutes to go before half time, the Red House goalkeeper made an excellent save from Jonny Beck.
In the second half, Fulneck started on top again and were unlucky not to score through a good chance from Robert Chivese. With the game starting to even up, Fulneck lost instrumental centre back, Jonny Beck, after a nasty gash to his eye. This proved to be t
