Diamond Jubilee

Our school was one of the recipients of a Jubilee tree pack sent by the Woodland Trust to public organisations, to mark Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. In this pack, there is one Royal Oak coming from the Queen's Royal Estate. This tree is to be planted in the place of a massive conifer which was blown down last month in the very strong winds. It was planned that the eco-group would carry out the tree planting this week, but due to the recent hard frosts the ground is too hard to dig. They hope to carry out the work after half term.

Year 8 Newsroom Project

Year 8 Newsroom Project20 Year 8 students spent the week experiencing life as Fleet Street apprentices this week as Fulneck's English department staged a successful newsroom project.

For the duration of the week the library was transformed into a bustling newsroom with students working in teams to produce rival newspapers.

8PE student Niamh Davis explained, "We've spent the past half term learning about how newspapers are put together. It's been really interesting to find out about the different types of newspaper and how they influence the way people think." Ibrahim Ijaz of 8PH added, "This project has encouraged me to start reading newspapers more regularly. I've really enjoyed working in the editorial team and researching stories. It's been brilliant!"

Rugby League

A group of 20 boarding and day students attended Leeds Rhinos' opening Stobart Super League fixture at Headingley on Friday night. Following previous trips to last year's Super League Grand Final and the Gillette Four Nations Final at Elland Road in November, Rugby League has become a firm favourite amongst Fulneck students, with regular visits planned to Headingley this season. The PE department has negotiated a discounted rate of just £5 per game for our students.

Sport

As a consequence of the recent cold weather which has resulted in frozen pitches there are no boys' sports reports in this week's news round-up.

Netball

U13   v Roundhay

On Monday, Fulneck U13's travelled to Roundhay School to play in a League Netball Match. Uncertain of the strength of the opposition, our team played hard from the start. It took Fulneck the first quarter to warm up and work out the strength of the opposition. It was a tough match with excellent passing sequences by both teams. It was important that both sides concentrated and utilised opportunities to gain possession of the ball. The Fulneck team was able to do this on more occasions than Roundhay, finally winning the match 18-13. Well done to all players, including Abbi Holyoake from Junior School.

U13  v Royds School

Again this was a league match and having seen the victories that Royds had accumulated over the season, we knew this was going to be a very hard match. The opposition were tall and seemed very confident. Fulneck took this in their stride and showed Royds that the match would not be won or lost until the final whistle. The game was goal for goal throughout until the last quarter when Niamh Davis intercepted a crucial ball in defence and Olivia Hellas converted it into a Fulneck goal. This was an exciting game and one that the girls can feel very proud to have won, by one goal. Well done to the team, the final score being 15-14 to Fulneck.
