Speech Day 2017

This year’s annual Speech Day and Prizegiving, held on Wednesday, was a memorable event. The weather was kind to us, and for the first time we were able to hold it outside in our magnificent grounds, looking out over the valley.

We were delighted to welcome back to Fulneck as our visiting speaker Amit Dhand, who was Head Boy in 1996. A pharmacist by trade, Amit is better known as the best-selling author of Bradford-based crime thriller Streets of Darkness. A second novel, Girl Zero, is being published in July, and a TV series is in the pipeline. Amit’s speech was hugely enjoyed by the audience of students, staff, parents and visitors, especially when he produced a suitcase full of his rejected manuscripts, making the point that success often does not come easily and stressing the importance of bouncing back from disappointment.

In the other speeches, Mrs Newman gave a summary of main events and achievements of another busy and fulfilling year at Fulneck; Head Boy Charlie Ellis and Head Girl Lizzie Lee spoke with great affection and pride about their journey through Fulneck since starting together in Year 7; and Oliva Hellas described the once-in-a-lifetime experience of visiting India in October, as well as presenting, with Mario Lai, a record of the sporting highlights of the year.

We were also treated to a musical feast, showcasing some of the great talent we have here at Fulneck. The Year 7 students started proceedings with a song from Joseph; there were virtuoso performances on the violin from William Yang and Ronald Leung, and on the piano from Kirsty Brien, as well as a beautiful flute duet from Naomi Calvert and Charlotte Bullock; the Band gave us rousing renditions of Imagine and We are the Champi-ons; the Choir were on top form with their singing of The Rhythm of Life and As Long as I Have Music; and there were powerful solos from singers Molly Fascione (Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again), Liberty Sims (The Power of Love) and Kieron Moore (Somewhere).
