In order to ensure that you are kept informed, we will now send the news-updates by 'School Post', as well as using the website.

Diamond Jubilee
Our school was one of the recipients of a Jubilee tree pack sent by the Woodland Trust to public organisations, to mark Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. In this pack, there is one Royal Oak coming from the Queen's Royal Estate. This tree is to be planted in the place of a massive conifer which was blown down last month in the very strong winds. It was planned that the eco-group would carry out the tree planting this week, but due to the recent hard frosts the ground is too hard to dig. They hope to carry out the work after half term.

Performance Tables
This week saw the publication of the Department for Education's School Performance tables. We at Fulneck were delighted to discover that, based on the average points score of each student in the Advanced Level examinations of 2011, Fulneck was ranked in the top 4% nationally, ahead of all other Independent Schools in Leeds and Bradford. A more detailed table is published on the School's website.

Careers
Miss Hopkins, Managing Director of a flourishing local business, Hopkins Catering, came into school this week to carry out mock interviews with Year 10 students. With each group, she ‘interviewed’ a volunteer in front of the class. She then talked about what employers expect and gave feedback on how well that person would have performed if it had been an interview for a real job. Her valuable advice on how to succeed at a job interview will be useful for the students when they meet their work experience employers for the first time, and it is knowledge that will help them for the rest of their working lives.

Netball U12 V GSAL, 9th January 2012
The first match of the year saw two U12 teams travelling to the Grammar School at Leeds. The girls were ready and raring to play again after the Christmas break but did not really know what to expect from their opposition. The first team went out strongly, remembering what they had learned in the first term of school; being able to link strong passes in a structured way down the court. Georgia Wade and Evie McArthur were confident when shooting and scored 12 goals between them in the match. Victoria Carter, Kim Basra and Abbi Holyoake (Year 6) were effective in defence being able to anticipate that ball and take many interceptions from their opponents. The final score was 12-2 to Fulneck, and an excellent game by all players.

Ski Trip
On 15th December, a group of 45 pupils and six staff travelled to Folgarida, Italy, unsure as to whether there would be enough snow on the slopes. Most of Europe had experienced a very dry autumn and snow was scarce. Ascending high into the Dolomite mountains without any signs of the white stuff, they awoke next morning to the glorious sight of a covering of snow which had fallen during the night.

Year 11 Sixth Form Taster Day
On Wednesday, Year 11 students enjoyed the opportunity to be Sixth Formers for the day. They were immaculately turned out in their business suits and ready for the challenges of A level study.
The students worked in small groups, taking part in five 'taster' lessons in subjects many had never studied before; namely, Economics, Media Studies, Psychology, Government and Politics and Philosophy & Ethics. All five subjects are available for study in the Sixth Form, along with many more. Miss Meadows, Head of Sixth Form, commented, "we are very lucky to have the flexibility here at Fulneck to be able to design a curriculum which is tailored each year to our students' interests and aspirations. It means that we can personalise our offer to individual students to help them fulfil their academic potential, as well as setting them up for success in winning a place in Higher Education."

Advent Activities
On Thursday 8th and Friday 9th of December the Church was open at lunchtime for Advent themed activities. There were six tables around the Church with members of the Church helping at each and Christmas Carols playing in the background. The first table invited pupils to think about which of the characters in the nativity story they were most like. At the second table they wrote down the distractions which prevent them focussing on God. The third table was a collage of the stable made from Christmas wrapping and adverts, turning the commercial into something spiritual. At the fourth table pupils wrote a prayer on a strip of paper and joined it to our prayer paper chain, which was added to by members of the Church on Sunday morning. The fifth table asked ‘What are you waiting for this Advent?’ and ‘What is God waiting for?’ At the final table they wrote a letter to God with their Christmas hopes and concerns. Over thirty pupils came over the two days. They enjoyed doing the activities, chatting with the adult helpers, and eating the chocolates which they took away with them at the end!

Rugby
10 a-side Tournament
U13s
Starting off against Hipperholme, the U13s scored the opening try with an excellent solo effort from Edmund Okapla. Excellent defensive work from Jack Bellfield prevented the opposition scoring on a number of occasions. Hipperholme finally broke through after a period of sustained pressure and continued their fine form with a couple of extra tries to finally seal the game in the dying minutes.
Against Read, Fulneck played extremely well considering it was their second game on the bounce. Edmund Okpala scored the first and this was quickly followed up by a quick brace from the improving Kelvin Odunuyui
As the Fulneck legs were tiring Read got back into the game and a quick hat-trick by Yorkshire player Will Deacon saw Read home with only a couple of minutes to spare.
This was a tough end to an extremely successful year for the U13s who have maintained a strong home record and recorded some excellent victories.

U13’s v Hipperholme
On Saturday, playing with a slightly weakened team, the U13s struggled a little in tough windy and wet conditions at Hipperholme. Playing against a physically larger pack, Fulneck kept working away and defended extremely well despite losing a couple of early tries. Edmund Okpala quickly hit back for Fulneck with a well taken try and an excellent finish. That was as good as it got for Fulneck despite the efforts of William Hainsworth who was outstanding as a fill in scrum half. Jack Belfield was always on the attack and was unlucky not to add to the score line.
Final Score - Fulneck 5 Hipperholme 27
Tries – Edmund Okpale
Conversions –
Man of The Match – William Hainsworth
Game Stars – Jack Bellfield Edmund Okpala

Theatre Visits
It's a hard-knock life! On Thursday December 1, Year 9 pupils, accompanied by their teachers, took the advantage to enjoy the highly praised production of Annie showing at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. This was a spectacular production, with exciting sets and costumes and a fast paced narrative which engaged a whole range of pupils, including some who were very sceptical beforehand. Next term pupils will able to use some of the insights they gained from this visit when they tackle the set design unit in Drama.
A good time was evidently had by all as various versions of 'Tomorrow', 'Easy Street' and the other musical classics from the show were to be heard being hummed or sung around the school for days after.
