House System

There are three houses which operate through the Senior School and Sixth Form and provide a vertical stream opportunity for pupils of all age groups to mix and further strengthen the community
feeling of belonging.

  • Asquith – after former pupil H. H. Asquith (Prime Minister of the United Kingdom 1908–16)
  • Oastler – after former pupil Richard Ostler, a school benefactor
  • Wolstenholme – after former pupil Elizabeth Clarke Wolstenholme Elmy (1833–1918)
    suffragist, life-long campaigner and organiser

Each house has roughly equal numbers of pupils in every year group.

In addition to engendering a sense of loyalty and community spirit for all pupils, a key aim of the house system is to provide leadership opportunities for pupils from Year 7 to Upper Sixth. There are house events throughout the year. These provide an opportunity for us to celebrate what has been achieved and showcase talent in an inter-house context. When pupils achieve merits for any aspect of school life, these contribute towards the house merit total and go towards the House Cup, which is presented annually.
